Do you want to start a blog but have no idea where to start and don’t want to spend a boatload of money?
(Pssst… Is boatload really a word? If it isn’t, it is now! Haha!)
Well let me just tell you I know exactly what you’re feeling and where you are at because I was there too when I was thinking about starting this blog and it’s extremely overwhelming and can even be stressful especially if you’re starting one because you need to make money to pay off student loans, debt or just because you have no other paycheck. Sound familiar?
Again, I know exactly what you’re going through because I was in the same exact boat! (Haha – see how that now ties in with the boatload expression??)

CHOOSE YOUR FOCUS, YOUR PASSION
The most profitable blogs are centered around passion. If you start a blog about something that you love, something you are passionate about, you will NOT lose interest. If you are starting a blog and following in other people’s footsteps and you are not truly interested, it will not be a successful, money-making blog. So identify your passions. What blogs do you always visit? What is it that gets you excited when you are talking to friends and family?

Many blog posts that I’ve read start with the next step as being blog setup but I found that starting to write blog posts first makes more sense to me. Why, you ask? Well first before paying to set up a domain name and setting up the entire blog, you’ll have a taste of writing and creating blog posts and know for sure if this is something that you see yourself doing to make an income. Also, if you create your blog first then you’ve already paid and the amount of time you’ve paid for, whether it be 1 year, 2 years or 36 months has already started so you’re cutting into that time creating blogs posts where if you write them first, you are not using that time!
So now back to writing!! When you launch your blog you should be launching with several completed blog posts, I’d say at least six but even better yet about 10-12 so people visiting have a lot to read and see your writing style and what you’re offering in not just 1 or 2 posts but many. It also makes your blog look more established and not brand new.
Once you are confident that this is your money making blog and you have your starting blog posts written, you’re ready to move to the next step!
- A powerful, compelling domain name. To check social media networks for availability a good website to use is name check.
- Quality Hosting
- WordPress Installation
I use HostGator and am very happy with it and here are a few reasons why:
- It’s affordable
- HostGator has made their Control Panel extremely user friendly
- They have 24 hour in-house technical support for your hosting account all year long so if you are up late working on your blog and have a question, they are there to help you!
- They have plans starting at $4 per month
- You can pay month-to-month or save a lot of money by paying annually
- HostGator offers a 45-day money back guarantee so you can cancel at any time if you find they’re not all you were hoping they would be. But if you like it as much as I do, that is not going to happen!
SET UP YOUR HOSTING ACCOUNT
To get started, go to HostGator’s Home Page:
PICK YOUR PLAN
I would start with the basic plan. It’s affordable and will allow you to get started without spending a ton of money! You can always upgrade later if you want or need to do so.

SELECT YOUR DOMAIN NAME
This is extremely important so this is one area you definitely want to put some thought into so you’re coming up with your best blog name!
CHOOSE YOUR PLAN
To get the best price, select 36 months. If you’re on a budget and don’t want to spend that amount of money at one time, then you can select a shorter plan. I selected 12 months at first. I figured I would know by the end of one year if blogging was going to be for me then I could renew again. DON’T FORGET TO RENEW YOUR PLAN WHEN THE TIME COMES!!
Next, you enter your billing information.
In HostGator, click on the Hosting Tab and then scroll down and click on Install WordPress with Quick Install:
Once you’ve checked out it’s time to install WordPress. HostGator makes it so easy to create a WordPress blog. They walk you through everything telling you exactly where to click and what to do!
This part is important because it’s where you’ll be deciding what extras you want and I think some are needed.
Then you’ll review everything, put in your personal information and credit card information to pay.
In HostGator, click on the hosting tab and then scroll down and click on Get Started with WordPress Today:
On the MarketPlace click on Install WordPress and follow the simple steps
CONGRATULATIONS!! YOU DID IT!! You are now officially have your very own blog!
So now if you’re just reading this and ready to start your blog click below:
You’ll need a theme and I found mine on Creative Market and it’s from BluChic. If you’re interested click here to check them out!
